When I first was determined to play cards with my middle school students years ago, I could find no one who knew anything about the names of cards. Eventually someone did point me to Vives and his dialogue about students playing cards. Several types of decks are discussed (it was not yet uniform), and some of the names of cards were in Greek. I wanted to simplify things for my students and thus Latinized and regularized some of the vocabulary. I am not saying that these are the right names for all the cards, only that these are what I use.
